A Wild Ride

I was put in as the young women's president in my ward yesterday. I am feeling overwhelmed but excited too. This is a shout out to anyone out there who may have ideas, suggestions, strategies, or tips. Send them my way!

Hi Nicole,

I was put in as YW President last May and completely understand the stress and anxiety that you are feeling. We have done a lot of things that I remember doing when we were in YW. Do you remember the Iron Rod activity that Chad and Dana Peart did for us? We did that at Youth Conference and the girls LOVED it and still talk about it. We have 1 week always devoted to personal progress, 1 week combined with the boys (take turns planning, plan for the year in December so you know what's coming up), 1 week combined with the girls (take turns planning between laurels miamaids and beehives), and 1 week separated in classes. One thing I was told was let the YW do the planning as well as preparation. You are basically there to help and assign. Another thing I would have liked to know is in January start planning for YW in Excellence (even though it's in November. A few of the girls might want to plan it for a 10 hour project. Anyway sorry for the book long comment. These are just things I found helpful when I was put in. So far it has been one of my favorite callings. I'm sure you will do an amazing job. By the way I have enjoyed your blog so much. I like to see your recipes as well as your decorating ideas.

Good Luck with your new calling!!

I am YW 1st counselor in our ward and I agree, this calling is so overwhelming. My biggest concern is the girls that don't come to church or to activities. I stopped by to introduce myself & let them know they are always welcome to come.
Text messaging is a life saver. Every week I send out a text to remind them of the activity or to remind them to bring their scriptures and Personal Progress books to church.
Probably the thing that helps me most is when I pray for them and for guidance. In fact, my new goal is going to be to pray for them individually, by name each night.
You'll do a fantastic job! They'll feel of your excitement and love for them.

i love my sweet young women! im in miamaids and my best advice is to have PATIENCE! you will learn to love them so much, they are at such a fun age! they all just want to be loved and accepted because they are going through the hard high school stuff. fun is always their desire so finding creative ways to make it all gospel oriented is a challenge at times! try mormonmodern.com and sugardoodle.net, they are 2 very cute sites for ideas that have S-T-Y-L-E and you will love them:) good luck! you will do a wonderful job i'm sure of it!

Wow! The above comments are so great! I think that the girls need to feel loved by you unconditionally, it is such a challenging time for young girls, some feel insecure, and not comfident or accepted, make sure you praise them and build there self esteems, you will see them blossom like a Rose. Your strong Testimony will shine through and be tool to help build their Testimonies. I promise you that you will become very attached, but that is ok! Relax, have fun and let the spirit guide you!! It is possible to have fun and still have a spiritual goal!! Our goal was to make sure they knew we loved them, and I feel like we are on the right path, Our Youth love to have combined activities with the boys, it has been fun to watch our youth bond and become good friends. I see no clicks, just good kids being friends with everybody A very rewarding calling, but lots of work!! Dont forget to Pray!! Love you, Mom
