New Headboard

Andy and I both dream of a dramatic, high headboard like this:

We currently have a headboard that looks like this:

I picked it up at a thrift store when I was single and recovered it a few times. It is basically made of card board and is falling apart.

We're too fond of the charming nook above the bed to cover it up and we don't have the hundreds or thousands it might cost to buy a tall headboard. So, we (read: he) set out to make our own tufted headboard.

Andy first built the wood frame to match the lines of our Z Gallery bedroom furniture. He primed it with a roller and sanded it and then spray painted it black for a beautiful finish.

Next, he laid out the pattern for the buttons and marked it on the foam and the masonite backing and drilled holes through both.

Next, he scored the foam in a diamond pattern. We got really thick foam so it would be extra luxurious to lean back on.

We covered upholstery buttons with the same stone-colored linen fabric that we used to cover the headboard. Then, he laid the fabric over the foam and laced the buttons through the holes.

When all the buttons were attached, he tightly wrapped the fabric around the back and stapled it down (that was the hardest part). It seemed like it would be a simple project, but the last few steps were a pain! We scotch-guarded the fabric and put it in place. I LOVE how it turned out. So plush and striking.

I don't want to put pillows on the bed and cover it up...

You need to put this kind of awesomeness on Andy's website as well. He is so good! I really want to buy some of his furniture someday!

Love, love, love it! You totally should have showed this off when I was there the other day (and if I had read your blog beforehand, I would have totally asked to see it). Now, does that very talented husband of yours take orders? I would LOVE to glam up my bedroom with a fun new headboard.
